flyers urged to be mindful of danger ![]() Kite flying, or "main kikik", is one of the few remaining traditional games that is still popular among locals today. Regardless of age and gender, kite flying is an annual activity enjoyed by many across the country. However, there are a number of problems associated with the game. Firstly, a kite-flying competition called "berpulut", which features a head-to-head battle between two players using razor sharp string to try and cut each other's kite off. Secondly, kite players, particularly the young ones, tend to get carried away while flying kites. Often, they would end up in the middle of the road without realising it, exposing themselves to traffic hazards. Due to these possible dangers, kite enthusiasts are urged to be sensible and be mindful of safety issues in order to avoid being caught up in unnecessary mishaps. | Record
kite flying attempt falls short A group of kite flyers in Palmerston North have failed in their attempt to break a world record. Hundreds of kite flyers gathered to break the record for the most kites flown at the same time on Saturday as part of Manawatu's inaugural's Airstream Festival. Event manager Anne Louise Wirth says they needed to get 675 kites airborn simultaneously for at least 30 seconds in order to get into the Guiness Book of World records. They managed to get just under 400 kites airborn. The world record attempt was part of a number of activities being held at the festival. Wirth says with 400 kites in the air it was beautiful spectacle and they will try again next year. New-Zélande - October 05 |

fighting brings Afghan culture, tradition to MSU Approximately 500 people attended the kite fighting event at Munn field on Friday evening, which was held in recognition of Khaled Hosseini's book, "The Kite Runner" - this fall's featured novel in the One Book, One Community program. Kite fighting is a sport in Afghanistan and featured in Hosseini's novel. It involves two or more kites that have their strings lined with glue and crushed glass. Once the kites are up in the air, opponents try to swoop in and cut each other's strings. The last kite flying is the winner. The kite runner is the person that finds the fallen kites. "The author describes this so well," said Ami Van Antwerp, East Lansing's communications specialist for events and the Web. "It's an honor to be the last kite flying and to find the fallen kites because traditionally they fly really high. It's supposed to be tricky to find them.

kites damage cars Dear friends, I am not against kite-flying but I feel the authorities should look into controlling the use of glass-laced strings. A few months ago, I had to bear the cost of $350 to re-paint the bonnet of my car after it was damaged by one of those glass-laced strings. Brunei - sept 05 See more : http://www.brudirect.com |

Nashua High School South students express their wishes on colorful kite
Robin Peringer’s art assignments have students learning more about themselves than just the left sides of their brains. Now flying high in the atrium on a 25-foot rainbow kite bearing the theme “May our dreams fly beyond ourselves and fill the world with hope,” students throughout the school have written their dreams. She said students barely made a sound when they were next to the kite, but just quietly stepped back and read others’ dreams when they were finished writing their own. The kite was hung in the hallway outside the art classrooms so all students and staff could have an opportunity to become a part of it. The students ultimately want to fly the kite as a culminating event in June. Floride - Octobre 05 |
