Dieppe Festival
9 to 17 sept.2006 :
For the first time in the world, a Maori team will present the ancestral traditions of kite.
Maori kite traditions are thoroughly linked to “Matariki” (small beam of stars, also called the Pleiades). They are historically indissociable . In the Maori culture, kites are considered as the link between earth and sky.
From the thousands kites decorated with shells, feathers, leafs, handmade objects and sculptures, which were flying at the beginning of the colonialist area, there is nothing left nowadays.
The expertise of kite making was found in different tribes, among written and oral recollections, and in traditional writings.
The return of traditional Maori kites had an additional impulse when the Maori New Years' Day and the Matariki celebrations also recovered a place of honour.
The sky of New Zealand welcomes again the colour and splendour of traditional Maori kite flying

China, Kites banned for spooking birds
In the south of China, Shenzhen has imposed a ban on flying kites in the city's mangrove park, situated at the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border area.
The ban came after a sharp reduction in the number of wild birds in the park.
Many wild birds have flown over the Shenzhen River to the Hong Kong side after being scared by the huge snakes, centipedes, eagles and other "creature" kites above the mangrove trees.
It was the first time the local government imposed a ban on flying kites in its parks.

Kites for Afghans kids
A kite project started by a Canadian soldier killed in Afghanistan is starting to get off the ground thanks to two Victoria men.
Before his death, Lieutenant Bill Turner had put in a request to the military for kites and soccer balls to give to children in Afghanistan. When he and three other Canadians were killed by a roadside bomb on April 22, it seemed this request died with him.
Bernard Tritz and Reg Nordby heard about Turner's kite crusade, they were moved.
''It just struck me, the symbolism of the freedom of kites'' said Nordby.
After spending three months planning and ensuring they got the green light from the military, Tritz and Nordby have begun collecting kites to send to Afghanistan. Their goal is to get 3,000 by the end of October - one for every Canadian soldier serving in the country.
The kites will be shipped over to troops through the Operation Santa Claus program.
''Nothing would be more wonderful than seeing kids in that area flying kites''.

Cursor kite

Tim Elverston's Cursor kite is a very clever idea.Quad-line control, asymmetrical framing, invisible stainless fittings, and opposed-bow tensioning for the sail make this incredible kite look digitally pasted right into the sky.
But it isn't. Carefully designed by Tim Elverston, this high-end addition to the WindFire collection marks the beginning of the WindFire OS Series. |
